AI and the future of European literature

Portell Sebastià
Novajra Francesca

Artificial intelligence stopped knocking on the door of literature long ago – it is now making itself at home. How are European legislation and the writers themselves dealing with the massive rise in generative models? This discussion among experts from the European Council of Literary Translators’ Associations (CEATL) and the European Writers’ Council (EWC) will focus on the most pressing impacts of AI on the book market. The EU Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) provides for a number of positive measures, while presenting difficulties about which professional organizations are sounding the alarm. How to ensure consent, fair remuneration and full transparency? Will literary translation and writing remain a quintessentially human domain based on empathy and cultural context, or will authors become low-paid editors for machine output? Where does technological progress end and a threat to cultural diversity begin?
