Contemporary stories with social motivation

Procházková Iva
Soukupová Petra
Březinová Ivona

We present three writers of fiction. Iva Procházková is also well known in Germany; her novel Joyo, Eleven and a Quarter appeared after a 14-year creative hiatus. Ivona Březinová is one of the few who write about children with severe disabilities. Petra Soukupová writes heroes from single-parent families or with minor disabilities. Ivona Březinová’s Yell Quietly, Bro, a novel about a single-parent family, depicts in highly credible fashion the everyday of a teenage twin with a severe form of autism. Titles of works by Petra Soukupová refer directly to “weird” heroes with physical or psychological problems; in Weird Kids’ Club, a disparate foursome of children is put to the test by an adventurous escape from home. Iva Procházková’s Joyo, too, refers to its hero in the title; in Esperanto, ĝojo means “joy”. The story has a broad thematic scope – it plausibly characterizes a school environment and peer and intergenerational relationships, and it touches on issues of migration and old age.
