The library was established with an ambitious vision: to serve not only to preserve unique materials relating to one of the 20th century’s most important writers but also as a vibrant space for reading, interpretation and discussion of his work. It has several interconnected pillars: professional management of the collection and access to it; research; a programme for tourism and culture; education; international cooperation. It holds lectures, book launches, specialist discussions and international get-togethers. It has a hand in conferences and exhibitions abroad, in places including Taiwan, Padua, Hong Kong and Riga. Much of its work involves systematic management of its extensive library and archives. Its programmes of education – which connect literature with development of critical thinking, empathy, dialogue and understanding of today’s world – are growing steadily; they now comprise a comprehensive offer for schools, the education sector and the general public.
