Radka Denemarková is one of the most significant voices in contemporary Czech literature. She has received numerous awards for her work as a novelist, essayist and translator. In her new novel Čokoládová krev [Chocolate Blood], she intertwines the life stories of three historical figures from the 19th century and traces connections between them up to the present day. Through French writer George Sand and Czech writer Božena Němcová, born in Vienna in 1820, Denemarková explores female authorship in the 19th century and mechanisms of power that permeate gender and economic relations. The compelling panorama is expanded by the story of John D. Rockefeller, oil magnate and first dollar billionaire, who built his empire on the other side of the Atlantic.
