With the coming of the new millennium, some creators of Czech comic books turned away from their child readerships to pursue the possibilities of the medium for adults. For a while at least, the discipline behind leading Czech comics throughout the 20th century found itself sidelined. In recent years, however, Czech comics for children have been making a comeback. Whilst building on tradition, their creators also strive to come up with new ideas, stimuli and styles. Comics by the three authors of our discussion take a fresh view of tried-and-tested fairytale themes. Among their inventions are friendly, talking wolves and postcards that can magically draw you into their world. It is often said that the child reader is unforgiving. Can the same be said of the child comic-book reader?
