Jiří Hájíček (b. 1967) writes poetry and prose and is the author of five novels. He lives in České Budějovice and has worked in a bank since 1993. Having begun as a poet, he made his debut in prose in 1998, with the collection of short stories Snídaně na refýži [The Breakfast on Safety Island]. Part of the realist movement of contemporary Czech literature, he finds much inspiration for his work in rural milieux of southern Bohemia. He has twice won a Magnesia Litera award. Two of his novels have been adapted into films: Zloději zelených koní [Green Horse Rustlers] (2016) and Dešťová hůl [The Rainstick] (2026).
