
Sufian Massalema (b. 1999) lives in Prague. A graduate in Law from the Faculty of Law of Prague’s Charles University, he is currently working towards a degree in Middle Eastern Studies at the Faculty of Arts of the same institution, his primary focus being on the relationship of Islamic law with other minority and religious groups. As a slam poet, he has performed in countries including Romania, Egypt and Vietnam. His writing has been translated into Polish, Spanish, English, Arabic and Vietnamese. In 2022, he won Cena Václava Hraběte za poezii [Václav Hrabě Award for Poetry]. Massalema co-organizes cultural and literary events. In 2024, Větrné mlýny published his debut collection of poetry Možnosti přehlíženého [Possibilities of the Overlooked]; it was nominated for Cena Jiřího Ortena [Jiří Orten Award]. His writing notably explores themes of identity, otherness, and life on the geographical and social margins.
