Pilátová Markéta

Markéta Pilátová (b. 1973) is a writer, journalist, author of children’s books, translator and Hispanist. She graduated in Romance Languages and History from the Faculty of Arts of Palacký University in Olomouc, where she worked as an assistant professor for six years. She taught Czech at the Department of Slavic Studies in Granada for two years and then spent twelve years in Argentina and Brazil, where she taught Czech to children of Czech expatriates and worked with Czech newspapers and magazines. She began writing while in Latin America, making her debut with the novel Žluté oči vedou domů [The Yellow Eyes That Lead Me Home], in which she brings together elements of European and Latin American cultures. Her best-known novels include Tsunami blues [Tsunami Blues], S Baťou v džungli [In the Jungle with Baťa] and Senzibil [Diviner]. In addition to her prose works for adults, she writes children’s books. Her works have been published in over ten languages. She has been repeatedly shortlisted for the Magnesia Litera and Josef Škvorecký awards. For her children’s books, she has won the Golden Ribbon, the V. F. Suk Award, and a Be Proud Award. Two of her children’s books have been included in the prestigious international catalogue The White Ravens and the Czech catalogue Nejlepší knihy dětem [Best Books for Children]. She lives in Prague and Velké Losiny.
