Jiří Dvořák (b. 1970) intended to become a botanist or an author of adventure novels. In 1993, he graduated with a degree in Plant Biotechnology from the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague, where he realized he would never be a scientist. Having worked as a proofreader and then as a magazine editor for a number of periodicals, he is now editor-in-chief of the magazine Naše krásná zahrada [Our Beautiful Garden]. Dvořák has combined his love of biology and adventure in the writing of books, in which he often tells stories about nature. His wonderful children’s books include Havětník [The Beastiary], Jak zvířata spí [How Animals Sleep], Rostlinopis [Strange Truths and Fables of the Green World], Slepice a televize [The Chicken and the Television], Stromovka [Stromovka], Šmalcova abeceda [Šmalec’s Alphabet], Minimax a mravenec [Minimax and the Ant], and Zpátky do Afriky! [Back to Africa!]. He lives in Prague and enjoys photography, sleeping and being quiet.
