Soukupová Petra

Petra Soukupová

Petra Soukupová (b. 1982) is one of today’s most successful Czech writers. To date, she has published four books for children and nine books for adults, earning numerous awards and nominations. Her debut novel K moři [To the Sea] (2007] won the Jiří Orten Award (for authors under the age of thirty) and was nominated for the Magnesia Litera and Josef Škvorecký awards. Soukupová’s second book, the short story collection Zmizet [To Disappear] (2009), was named Magnesia Litera Book of the Year and nominated for the Josef Škvorecký Award. Her children’s books Bertík a čmuchadlo [Bertie and the Snuffler] (2014) and Kdo zabil Snížka? [Who Killed Snowy?] (2017) were included in the prestigious White Ravens catalogue of best books for children and young adults from around the world.

The unique combination of Who Killed Snowy?, a children’s adventure story, and Nejlepší pro všechny [Best for Everybody] (2017), a book for adults published simultaneously, earned two nominations at the 2018 Magnesia Litera awards. Klub divných dětí [The Weird Kids’ Club] (2019), Soukupová’s third children’s book, and the short story collection Věci, na které nastal čas [Things Whose Time Has Come] (2020) both crossed the bestseller threshold of 10,000 copies sold shortly after release. Soukupová’s novels Marta v roce vetřelce [Marta in the Year of the Alien] (2011) and Pod sněhem [Under the Snow] (2015) also did well with readers and critics. The novel Nikdo není sám [No One Is Alone] was published in late 2022. A year later came the children’s book Divné děti a smutná kočka [Weird Kids and a Sad Cat], a follow-up to The Weird Kids’ Club. Soukupová has written several screenplays based on her books, including, in 2018, for the film Na krátko [Short Cut], based on a short story from To Disappear. She also works as a screenwriter for television.

Works translated into: Albanian, Arabic, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Danish, Hungarian, Italian, Korean, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Polish, Russian, Serbian, Slovenian, Vietnamese.
