The Czech writer Dora Kaprálová has been awarded the European Union Prize for Literature for her novel Mariborská hypnóza (in English: The Maribor Hypnosis, to be published by mikrotext in a translation by Nataša von Kopp). She thus follows in the footsteps of previous Czech winners Bianca Bellová, who received the prize in 2017 for her novel “Jezero”, and Lucie Faulerová, who was honoured in 2021 for her novel “Smrtholka”.
The winner was selected by a seven-member jury from a total of fourteen nominated authors. The result was announced on Friday, 30 May, at the International Book Fair in Warsaw.
The novel was published by Větrné mlýny. In it, the author draws on her creative residency in Maribor, Slovenia. The jury praised the book’s poetic and playful exploration of illusion, imagination and the search for hope in an uncertain world.
We are also delighted that Dora Kaprálová will be attending this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair and warmly congratulate the author on this further significant literary accolade!
