Czechia’s role as guest of honour at the fair has brought with it a number of new translations of Czech literature into German. Most of these are contemporary works, and many are from voices from the “country on the coast” heard for the first time in the German language. What attracts publishers in the German-speaking area to a Czech book? Topic? Personality of the writer? Mere coincidence? Can a literature often overlooked in our linguistic region, such as Czech, arouse the interest of a readership? And if so, how can this interest be stabilized given the incredibly short life cycle of books on the market?
