A look at Czech literature in translation raises questions of the extent to which voices translated into German are truly representative of the Czech literary scene. Which authors are translated, and which have so far remained out of sight for a German-speaking readership? What are the mechanisms of selection and notions of genre to which the German market holds? How are small publishing houses and translations of excerpts involved in the process? And which literary “pearls” still lie undetected at the bottom of the sea (as the motto of the host country “Czechia: a country on the coast”, would have it)?
