Denemarková Radka

Radka Denemarková

Radka Denemarková (b. 1968) is a novelist, screenwriter, literary historian, and translator of German literature. She is one of the most distinctive and widely translated Czech authors today. Her books include Peníze od Hitlera [Money from Hitler] (2006), Kobold [Kobold] (2011), Příspěvek k dějinám radosti [A Contribution to the History of Joy] (2014), Hodiny z olova [Hours of Lead] (2019) and, most recently, Čokoládová krev [Chocolate Blood] (2023). Her work repeatedly addresses crises of European values and the legacy of totalitarianism, as well as exploring power relations in various forms. Denemarková is the only Czech author to have won a Magnesia Litera in four different categories. She has also received a number of prestigious international awards, such as the Georg Dehio Book Prize (2012), the Brücke Berlin Prize (2022), and the European Tolerance Prize for Democracy and Human Rights (2024). Also in 2024, Radka Denemarková became the first Czech writer to be awarded the Odradek-Buchpreis (part of Austria’s Franz Kafka Prize) for a publication related to Kafka, was admitted to the Deutsche Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung, and received the Medal of Merit (First Class) for her contribution to culture and the arts from the President of the Czech Republic.

Works translated into: Arabic, Armenian, Bulgarian, Chinese, Croatian, English, French, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Serbian, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Vietnamese.
