
Dora Kaprálová (b. 1975) was born in Brno and currently lives and works mostly in Berlin. Her novel Mariborská hypnóza [The Maribor Hypnosis], published by Větrné mlýny in 2025, received the European Union Prize for Literature in May 2026. In addition, Kaprálová won the top category of the Czech Republic’s most prestigious literary award, the Magnesia Litera Book of the Year 2025, and also received the Magnesia Litera Award for Prose. The novel was also shortlisted for the Czech Critics’ Award. As well as being read by the author for Czech Radio’s Vltava station, the novel has been adapted for the stage.
Kaprálová is not only an author of books for adults and children. She makes radio documentaries and reportage on different themes. In recent years, she is an ever more frequent collaborator with Czech theatres. The Maribor Hypnosis follows Kaprálová’s works of prose Berlínský zápisník [Berlin Notebook], Ostrovy [Islands], Utrpení a jiné žánry [Suffering and Other Genres], Zimní kniha o lásce [A Winter Book of Love] (all published by Druhé mesto) and Pan Nikdo a bílá tma [Mr Nobody and the White Darkness] (published by Baobab).
